This is a 2-story bungalow with an attic, designed to accommodate 20 family members spanning 3 generations, along with helpers. The primary objective was to maximise the floor area of the ancestral home to meet the evolving needs of the entire family.
Inspired by the closely-knit nature of the family, the design concept centered around a double volume space which served as the focal point around which every space revolved.
At the heart is a double volume dining hall, visually connected to all upper floors. A “floating” feature staircase was incorporated within this void to serve as the vertical circulation. This leads to a pair of master suites at the attic.
There is an unorthodox fengshui requirement that this north-west-facing house have a main door that faces south. This means the main door is open towards the rear. We designed the entire south-west side facade like a courtyard, with the main door hidden from the front but connected undercover through the large cantilevered car porch roof.
The ground floor prominently features a spacious open living room that overlooks the car porch.
Leveraging the absence of a main door at the front facade, an elevated lounge with an open
sitting deck was positioned to face the front.
