Conservation Shophouse @ Onan Road, Singapore

Understanding the owner’s refined taste in antique and old charm drives the design concept for this award-winning pre-war conservation shophouse residential unit in the East Coast area, Singapore.

The front portion of the house is conserved and carefully restored. Existing plaster on party walls is painstakingly removed to reveal the beauty of old brick works, and most solid timber floor beams and rafters are carefully restored. Even existing solid timber balustrades were kept for adaptive reuse in various areas of the new home.

New interventions such as steel structures for the new loft that overlooks the family hall and master bedroom and the lightweight open staircase are kept to as minimal as possible.

The new elements are intentionally set away from the old whenever possible to enhance the openness within the old building envelope for the maximum appreciation of the old charm of such a conservation shophouse.

A new rear annex is added for a double-volume dining/ living space with an antique wrought iron staircase juxtaposed to create a nostalgic experience while ascending to the roof garden above.

The double-volume space is also designed for maximum openness with a frameless glass enclosure to allow one to look through and get a glimpse of the old shophouse. The timber screen and lush greenery at the rear garden help to shield away a public car park at the rear.

A courtyard connects the old front and new rear with feature walls, greenery and sculptures. This serves as a pleasant visual relief and brings daylight and ventilation to the elongated shophouse.
