Cun Jin Tower Service Apartment @ Shenzhen, China

The initial design brief entailed the creation of residential apartments on the upper 13 floors of an existing 25-storey office tower. The primary objective was to depart from the form of the current structure while incorporating a new program for the serviced apartments. A thorough analysis of the building’s structure was conducted to develop a scheme that could be replicated from the 13th to the 25th floor. All apartment layouts were meticulously tailored to adhere to this framework. In order to ensure proper ventilation and habitable living spaces, bathrooms and balconies were strategically aligned along the building perimeter.

The design concept drew inspiration from the haphazard arrangement of a child’s building blocks.

This stacked pattern was subsequently ‘folded’ along the building's perimeter, and the resulting voids, formed by the balconies, were adorned with various colors to achieve a distinctive interplay of mass and void on the building’s elevations.
