Reflections @ Luanda, Angola (Mixed Use Development)
This schematic design proposal consists of 2 concepts, both inspired by the unique setting of the site. The site is strategically located along Murtala Mohammed Avenue on the peninsula, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Luanda Bay. The site exposes itself to the changing reflections of the seawater, as well as to the sunrise and sunset on both sides. Both concepts attempt to take full advantage of these natural phenomena possessed by the site.
Symbolizing Angola's Resources in Design
Due to the significance of gold, oil, and diamonds as economic resources of Angola, both concepts aim to symbolize these through the representation of their colors in the architecture.
Facing the sea on both sides, the building form mimics the waves. Twisted along the vertical and horizontal axis, the architecture undulates three-dimensionally.
Metaphorically and symbolically, two pieces of the sea are cropped and erected vertically on the site. This creates a void, a canyon, between the two twisted forms that define an internal boulevard of the retail space.

Framing Key Dates and Views
Facing the east and west, the architecture acts as a frame, capturing the scenes of the sunrise and sunset on both sides. To enhance the significance of this, in terms of social and cultural relevance, the form is tilted to frame the sun more accurately on two important dates: May 25th, African Liberation Day, and December 25th, Christmas Day.
The frame also acts as a window, allowing views towards the Atlantic Ocean and Luanda Bay simultaneously.
