Terrace House @ Siglap Rise, Singapore

The site is an extremely small plot, with an intermediate house comprising barely more than 100sqm of buildable footprint after considering all the setback requirements. The challenge is to efficiently use the limited space for a three-generation family, creating an interesting internal spatial experience with ample daylight and cross ventilation. This unique challenge set the tone for a creative design approach.

Geometric Staircase & Open Spaces

A sculptural, circular geometric staircase becomes the focal point of the house, linking the open ground floor to the split levels and internal balconies of the upper floors. The lower balcony outside the Family Room allows visual connectivity with the Living/Dining space below, and the upper balcony sits just outside the kids' bedrooms. The end result is a series of multi-tiered living areas that make the house feel spacious and full of life.

Sunken Lounge & Playful Staircase

Each space is fully utilized, with the bottom of the staircase becoming a sunken lounge and the internal balconies serving as study areas for the kids. The sunken lounge and circular stairs have since become a popular playground for the kids.

The Master Suite is in the attic, with an unobstructed view of a school field opposite the house, accessible via an open private terrace.

As the front facade faces west, a system of openable timber trellis screens is designed for flexibility of change by the owner, while also adding distinctive architectural features to the design.
