Terrace House @ Thomson Terrace, Singapore

This modest intermediate Terrace House is situated on a narrow plot with the back garden positioned one storey lower than the front entrance. In response to the client's request to maximize natural light and airflow within the house, an elongated double-volume space has been created at the entrance level.

This design element allows for a stunning view that visually connects the front garden to the lush greenery at the back. The visual connection is also intended to facilitate interaction among family members in the shared living, dining, cooking, and entertaining spaces on the first 2 storeys.

The second storey comprises more private areas, such as bedrooms and a family room, forming a box that hovers above the double-volume space. This culminates in a fully opened roof terrace, providing a space for family activities in the land-scarce environment of Singapore.

An open staircase, situated within a naturally ventilated courtyard, links all floors. The party wall has been designed with raw, original bricks exposed, with added cables for greenery to grow upwards, creating an internal garden where light and air filter in from a trellis above.

The facade is kept simple, with original diagonal groove lines replicated at the main door to add artistry and evoke memories of the original house which the owner grows up in.
